TE 846- Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners

Instructor: Chad Waldron

This course focused on assessing literacy needs in students.  I worked with a particular student to assess their literacy level at the beginning of the class, plan lessons to meet their needs and assess growth at the end of the class.  The time spent working closely with this student allowed them to make significant growth in a short period of time, and allowed me to see how differentiating and preparing specific lessons for students can assist in their literary growth.  Through this course, I am better able to assess my students’ needs and plan accordingly for them to make growth in the academic setting.

Spring 2014

ED 800- Concepts of Educational Inquiry

Instructor: Dr. Steven Weiland

This was a self-paced course through six units about education, teaching and learning in a variety of settings, with reflective papers at the end of each.  The overarching theme for this course was inquiry and looking at ourselves as learners and educational history.  It looked at philosophy, teacher inquiry, historical approaches, theories, customs and cultural influences, and technology.  While working through this course, I was able to look at my own learning experiences as well as my classroom teaching.  The vast variety of educational opportunities and experiences is imperative to learning, and those approaches impact the educational outcome for individuals.  As a teacher, this course allowed me to open up my idea of education to include more than the traditional classroom setting familiar to many, and embrace the variety of opportunities available to everyone.

CEP 813- Electronic Assessments

Instructors: Dr. Paul Morsink; Spencer Greenhalgh

This course looked at electronic assessments in regards to classrooms.  It looked at various technology tools, such as Minecraft, which could be used to assess students, and have them demonstrate ability in non-traditional formats.  We looked at technology based assessments, but also other methods (portfolios, rubrics, etc.) to gather information in a format unlike traditional tests.  The way I looked at assessments changed through this course and allowed me to address these changes in my own classroom moving forward.

Fall 2015

EAD 860- Concepts of Learning Society

Instructors: Dr. Steven Weiland; Graham McKeague

This course looked at a “learning society” and how it relates to education.  There are many facets to a “learning society” and can include individual or societal learning, historical and newer technologies and local and global impacts.  There are multiple learning opportunities for individuals, and those opportunities take form in various locations and in different formats.  I was able to look at different ways that individuals learn and how they become part of a “learning society” in multiple different ways.

Spring 2016

EAD 822- Diverse Students and Families

Instructor: Dr. Rema Reynolds

This course looked at the various experiences of diverse students and families in the educational setting.  We looked at how a variety of students experience education, and how at times the education system is constructed in a way to keep some students from succeeding.  Not only are some students provided different opportunities, this at times can be based on aspects outside their control (i.e. race, ethnicity, gender, etc.).  I was able to look at how different special education delivery models impact students from minority backgrounds.

CEP 841- Classroom Management in Inclusive Classrooms

Instructors: Dr. Troy Mariage; Danielle Wexler (TA) ; Arfang Dabo (TA)

This course looked at classroom management theories and ways to support students in the educational setting.  I was able to look specifically at an area of special education in which many of my students qualify, and how it impacts their educational opportunities.  I spent time learning about Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) and its implications for classrooms and schools as a whole.  This course provided information and strategies to implement in my classroom and ways to support fellow teachers who have students in their inclusive classrooms with varying needs and abilities.
